Alibaba Unveils Zhenwu V900 Chip and Qwen3.8-Max Model in $53 Billion AI Push

Alibaba rolled out what it is calling China's most powerful AI chip, the Zhenwu V900, developed by its T-Head semiconductor unit, while also revealing its latest flagship AI model, Qwen3.8-Max. Chief Executive Eddie Wu said the V900 delivers three times the performance of its predecessor, with larger GPU memory and bandwidth, and a single cluster of the chips can link up to 500,000 cards to train and run frontier AI models. The chip is scheduled for mass production and Alibaba plans to update its AI chip lineup annually.

On the model side, Qwen3.8-Max contains 2.4 trillion parameters and is described by Alibaba as competitive with Anthropic's AI systems. The company said the model is set for release within days of the announcement.

Alibaba is backing the hardware and model push with a commitment of more than $53 billion over three years to build out AI capabilities across its businesses. The company also set a target of more than 20 gigawatts of global data-center capacity by 2032. The announcements carry strategic weight as U.S. export restrictions limit Chinese firms' access to Nvidia's most advanced chips, making homegrown alternatives a national priority.

Shares of Alibaba rose roughly 3 percent in premarket trading on the news, reflecting investor enthusiasm for the company's ambition to control both the hardware and software layers of its AI infrastructure.
