Bitcoin Erases Rally to $85,000 Despite Record ETF Inflows Topping $1 Billion in Three Days

Bitcoin surged toward $85,000 before reversing sharply, falling back to around $82,000 to $83,000 on October 22 and erasing virtually all of its recent gains. The selloff came despite a powerful stretch of institutional buying, with U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs drawing more than $1.07 billion across three consecutive sessions from October 19 to 21, the strongest weekly pace since April.

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust posted its largest single-day inflow since January 14, 2026, while Fidelity also contributed significantly to Wednesday's $528 million haul, which broadened across eight funds. Spot ether ETFs snapped a five-day outflow streak with a $14.9 million inflow on Wednesday, though they remained net negative at minus $114.5 million over the broader period.

The reversal had multiple catalysts. Reports of U.S.-Israeli strike plans against Iran sent Brent crude to $111 a barrel, triggering a broad risk-off move. Weak AI-sector sentiment hit Nasdaq futures, which slid 1.72%, as doubts around Tesla, Meta and related names soured equity markets. Tesla's Q3 results, which showed GAAP net income falling 43% to $787 million on revenue of $28.05 billion, also weighed on sentiment even though adjusted earnings of $0.48 per share beat the $0.45 estimate. Tesla and SpaceX held all 30,221 BTC on their combined balance sheets through Q3, worth roughly $2.54 billion.

On-chain data from Glassnode placed Bitcoin's key floor near $80,000 to $81,000, the estimated average acquisition cost for spot ETF holders and publicly traded corporate treasuries. A close below that level, Glassnode warned, could put the mid-$70,000s back in play. ETF inflows also showed uneven momentum: after $526.7 million on October 19, flows slowed 95.6% to just $23.2 million on October 20 before recovering sharply on October 21. Separately, a whale sold approximately 1,917 BTC worth $159 million over 11 days and rotated the proceeds into roughly 64,545 ETH, while a government-linked wallet moved approximately $1 billion in Bitcoin to Coinbase addresses. Long liquidations reached $18.41 million in a single hour at one point, and $210 million in crypto longs were wiped out during the broader plunge. Options markets showed $86,000 calls leading volume with open interest at $38.56 billion, but prediction markets placed only a 3% probability on Bitcoin reaching a record high before year-end.
