Bitcoin Tops $80,000 and Triggers $183 Million Short Squeeze as CFTC Files Crypto Rules With White House

Bitcoin surged 5.88% on September 18 to hit an intraday high of $80,935, reclaiming the $80,000 level for the first time since its 2026 highs and catching bearish traders deeply offside. The rally obliterated roughly $183 million in crypto short positions within a single hour, a short squeeze that amplified the move and drove broad strength across digital assets.

The advance came despite the Clarity Act, the crypto market structure bill that the industry had spent years and hundreds of millions of dollars lobbying for, stalling in the Senate in what analysts described as its effective death for the 2026 legislative calendar. Investors appeared to look past the legislative setback, focusing instead on regulatory agencies pressing ahead on their own. The CFTC filed its two-part rulemaking package, titled "Regulation Crypto Asset Transactions and Regulation Crypto Asset Markets," with the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs for review, signaling the agency intends to build a crypto oversight framework with or without Congress. The SEC had separately proposed its own crypto rulemaking in August.

Altcoins joined the rally. Solana and Hyperliquid both moved higher, with Hyperliquid's HYPE token and Zcash's ZEC each hitting new record highs during the session. Technical analysts noted that while the breakout above $80,000 appeared technically valid, the move had stretched short-term indicators and left Bitcoin at risk of a near-term pullback.
