Brent Crude Hits Five-Month High Above $115 as Iran Warns of War and Middle East Exports Plunge
Read this in the Market Flux appOil prices surged to multi-month highs on October 23, with Brent crude touching $116 a barrel, its highest level in nearly six months, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate climbing above $101 a barrel, up more than $2 on the day. The rally was driven by escalating Middle East tensions, with Iran declaring it is prepared for warfare and separately claiming it had stopped what it described as illicit vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for roughly a fifth of the world's seaborne crude.
Export data underscored the severity of the supply disruption. Tanker tracking figures showed Iran's crude exports have been zero for more than three months compared with their January and February 2026 average, while Kuwait is down 39%, Qatar is down 47%, and Iraq is down 13%. Saudi Arabia has partially offset the losses, with exports from its west coast up 296%, though its east coast shipments are down 27%. Houthi attacks on Saudi Aramco facilities at Yanbu, the Shaybah oilfield, and Saudi airports, alongside a UAE oil spill, added further upward pressure on prices. Physical oil prices briefly dipped in the Middle East as flows through Hormuz held up, but the broader market continued to price in a meaningful risk premium.
The transportation cost of crude has compounded the supply shock. Goldman Sachs analysts noted the global average crude freight rate has surged to more than $20 per barrel, up from roughly $3 a barrel a year ago, adding a hidden cost that refiners must absorb on top of the benchmark price. The U.S. Oil ETF was up 141% year to date, hitting an 11-year high, reflecting deep backwardation in WTI futures. AAA's December RBOB gasoline reading implies pump prices of around $4.15 a gallon within weeks, raising fresh inflation concerns at a moment when the 10-year Treasury yield was hovering near 5.04%.
The oil surge weighed heavily on equity markets. U.S. futures pointed lower ahead of Friday's open, with the Nasdaq 100 down 1.6% and the S&P 500 off 0.9%, as investors struggled to find dip buyers even in the face of better-than-expected earnings. The AI trade remained under particular pressure, with Lam Research falling roughly 9% and Tesla off around 5%. In a separate but related development, the first Russian diesel tanker bound for the United States since 2022, the Malta-flagged AGIOI FANENDES, departed Primorsk and is expected to arrive in New York around November 7, a modest but symbolically significant move to ease fuel supply tightness on the U.S. East Coast. Mining companies also flagged that surging diesel prices were squeezing profit margins across the sector.
