Brown-Forman Q1 Earnings Beat on EPS but Sales Miss as Tequila Slumps and Full-Year Profit Outlook Contracts

Brown-Forman reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 results on September 2 that offered a mixed picture: GAAP earnings per share of $0.38 beat analyst estimates by $0.01, while revenue of $911 million fell $4 million short of expectations. Organic net sales declined 1% in the quarter, as flat whiskey volumes and growth from ready-to-drink products and Jack Daniel's Tennessee Blackberry were offset by a 17% drop in Herradura Tequila net sales, weakness in used barrel sales, and softness across several developed international markets.

The company described the operating environment as challenging and cautioned that gross margins, which peaked in the first quarter, are expected to compress for the remainder of the fiscal year. Management reiterated its full-year organic net sales outlook of approximately flat growth but flagged that organic operating income is expected to decline 3% to 5% for fiscal 2027.

Despite the revenue miss and cautious guidance, Brown-Forman shares rose 4.4% in midday trading on September 2, suggesting investors were relieved the results were largely in line with tempered expectations. The company continues to contend with sluggish broader spirits demand, with tequila weakness and soft consumer spending acting as the most acute near-term headwinds.
