Crown Castle Surges 16% as SpaceX Acquires Nationwide 800 MHz Spectrum Portfolio

Crown Castle shares jumped as much as 16% on Friday, topping market leaders, after SpaceX announced a deal to acquire 100% of Grain Management's nationwide 800 MHz low-band spectrum portfolio for an undisclosed amount. The move signals that SpaceX is advancing its Starlink Mobile service toward full terrestrial wireless coverage, which still requires cell tower infrastructure in dense urban areas, raising the prospect of SpaceX becoming a major new tower tenant alongside existing customers like Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

The deal sent ripples across the broader tower REIT sector, with American Tower and SBA Communications also rallying sharply, each up at least 6% at Friday's open, as investors bet that SpaceX would eventually need to lease tower space for a nationwide ground network. Real estate was among the day's leading sectors, lifted substantially by the tower stocks.

The news cut in two directions across telecom. While Crown Castle, American Tower, and SBA Communications surged on potential new demand, legacy carriers AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile all fell under pressure as investors weighed the competitive threat of a well-capitalized SpaceX entering the wireless market with its own spectrum. Analysts at William Blair noted that the carriers have been skeptical that SpaceX's network can match their quality, and flagged that deployment and profitability remain key tests for Starlink's wireless ambitions.
