FDA Approves Eli Lilly Onswik as First Once-Weekly Basal Insulin for Type 2 Diabetes

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Eli Lilly's Onswik, generic name insulin efsitora alfa-gobe, as a once-weekly basal insulin injection for adults living with type 2 diabetes. The approval marks a significant shift in insulin therapy, as all existing basal insulin options require daily injections.

Lilly says Onswik could reduce the total number of injections a patient takes by more than 300 per year compared with a once-daily basal insulin regimen. The company said U.S. availability is expected in the coming months. Onswik had previously received a positive opinion from the European Medicines Agency's Committee for Human Medicinal Products, positioning Lilly for potential approvals in additional markets.
