France Has Sold 3.6 Million Barrels of Diesel From Strategic Reserves to Curb Pump Prices

France's Energy Ministry confirmed on November 6 that 3.6 million barrels of diesel have been sold out of the country's strategic reserves to date, as part of a government-backed effort to lower fuel prices for consumers amid a cost-of-living crisis.

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu had earlier pledged to release diesel from strategic stockpiles to hold down pump prices and prevent power bills from surging this winter, in response to mounting public pressure and student unrest. French fuel retailers, including major chains, subsequently announced lower prices at service stations following the drawdown. The government also moved to exempt retailers from the usual obligation to replace reserve volumes released under the scheme, reducing a potential barrier to participation.

The release contributes to a broader international effort, with France acting alongside Group of Seven partners on strategic energy stocks. The 3.6 million barrel figure represents the cumulative total sold to date and may continue to rise as the program remains active.
