Shopify Stock Plunges 16% After Q3 Revenue and Subscription Sales Miss Estimates

Shopify reported third-quarter 2026 results before the opening bell on November 3 that sent its stock tumbling roughly 16% in premarket trading, its first revenue miss since 2022. Revenue came in at $3.74 billion, up 32% year over year but just short of the $3.75 billion consensus estimate. Gross Merchandise Volume grew 29% to $119.15 billion, a deceleration from the 32% GMV growth posted the prior quarter, and also fell short of the $120.08 billion analyst estimate.

The miss was concentrated in two areas that alarmed investors. Subscription Solutions revenue of $836 million, up 20% year over year, trailed estimates of roughly $850 million to $855 million. GMV growth slowing four percentage points in a single quarter compounded the concern. On the positive side, Merchant Solutions revenue surged 35% year over year to $2.91 billion, beating the $2.88 billion estimate. Operating income jumped 66% to $568 million against an estimate of $523.9 million, and free cash flow surged 61% to $816 million, delivering a 22% FCF margin compared with 18% a year earlier. Net income reached $462 million, or 36 cents per share, up from $264 million, or 20 cents per share, a year ago. Adjusted EPS of $0.49 beat the $0.48 consensus.

For the fourth quarter, Shopify guided revenue growth in the low-thirties percentage range year over year, gross profit dollar growth at a high-twenties rate, operating expenses at 29% to 30% of revenue, stock-based compensation of $155 million, and an FCF margin consistent with Q4 2025. CFO Jeff Hoffmeister cited "32% revenue growth and a 22% free cash flow margin" as evidence of consistent execution, while President Harley Finkelstein highlighted the $119 billion in GMV powered during the quarter. Markets were unpersuaded, with analysts and investors focusing on the top-line miss and the absence of any reacceleration signal in the Q4 outlook.
