Sprouts Farmers Market Sinks 23% After Q3 Miss and Bleak Fourth-Quarter Guidance

Sprouts Farmers Market shares fell roughly 23% on October 29 after the company reported a third-quarter earnings miss and issued a sharply negative outlook for the fourth quarter. Diluted EPS of $1.21 came in below the $1.23 analysts expected, while comparable store sales slipped 0.9% and customer transactions fell 3.3%. Total revenue rose 5% to $2.30 billion, driven by a record 15 new store openings during the quarter, but the weakness at existing locations overshadowed that growth.

For the fourth quarter, Sprouts guided to a 2% to 4% decline in comparable store sales, a forecast that alarmed investors and analysts alike. Outgoing CEO Jack Sinclair cited a challenging consumer environment and a cyclospora disruption as contributing factors, while acknowledging that the company recognizes "the need to improve our performance."

The selloff prompted swift analyst action. Bank of America downgraded the stock to Underperform from Buy with a price target of $47, and RBC Capital Markets cut it to Sector Perform from Outperform with a $49 target. Analysts described the company's difficulties as structural rather than cyclical, suggesting the headwinds are unlikely to resolve on their own. Year to date through Q3, comparable store sales were down 1.2% and diluted EPS had fallen 2% versus the prior year period.
