Trump and Denmark Sign Historic Greenland Security Deal at UNGA, Allowing Two New US Military Sites

President Donald Trump signed a security agreement with Denmark and Greenland on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly on September 22, granting the United States what Trump described as permanent control over Greenland's security while Denmark and Greenland retain sovereignty over the territory. The deal, which Trump called "long in the making," allows the U.S. to establish two new military sites on the island and significantly expands America's Arctic military footprint.

The signing followed an announcement Trump made days earlier, in which he posted that the agreement gives the U.S. "permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland." Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen declared at the signing that "today we are signing a deal that can last forever," signaling a diplomatic resolution to months of tension after Trump had previously threatened to seize Greenland by force, a stance that had strained relations with NATO allies.

Greenland's strategic importance centers on missile defense, Arctic shipping routes, and substantial deposits of critical minerals. Analysts see the deal as providing a durable policy tailwind for U.S. defense spending, satellite infrastructure, and Arctic development projects going forward.
