Trump and NYC Mayor Mamdani Hold Hour-Long Meeting at Gracie Mansion on Immigration and Housing

President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani met for about an hour at Gracie Mansion on Monday, their third meeting in roughly 12 months and the first time a sitting president has made an official visit to the mayor's residence since the 1980s. The meeting, timed to Trump's presence in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, drew wide attention given the stark ideological gap between a Democratic socialist mayor and a Republican president.

Mamdani said he pressed Trump on the immigration status of Haitian Temporary Protected Status holders and raised concerns about immigrant safety more broadly, alongside discussions on housing affordability and his large-scale housing development plan. Trump left the door open to supporting that plan and reminisced about past visits to Gracie Mansion. Mamdani said any conversation focused on delivering for the city is "worthwhile to have," and he stood by his decision to engage with the president even as some Democrats have drawn criticism for meeting with senior administration officials.

After the meeting, Mamdani held a press conference and told reporters that all members of the press were welcome, a pointed contrast with Trump's remark that major TV outlets would "never boycott me" following a dispute that led several networks to halt White House pool coverage. Separately, French President Emmanuel Macron disclosed that he also met with Trump in New York and raised the idea of a moratorium on deep strikes targeting energy infrastructure between Ukraine and Russia.
