Trump Backs Diesel Export Ban but Energy Secretary Wright Softens Stance to Voluntary Restrictions

President Donald Trump declared support for banning U.S. diesel exports as domestic and European prices surge to record highs amid the wars in Iran and Ukraine, setting off an immediate market reaction and a public split within his own administration. European diesel futures soared on the news, while U.S. diesel futures came under pressure, and crude oil climbed back above $100 a barrel, snapping a five-day losing streak.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright broke with Trump on Wednesday, saying a blanket diesel export ban would not work and would instead push up gasoline and jet fuel prices, a position that put him directly at odds with the president. Wright later clarified that the administration was not pursuing an outright ban but rather voluntary restrictions, telling the Journal House at the United Nations General Assembly that "we're trying to avoid a blunt hammer of a government policy, understanding the complexity of refining."

The proposal is drawing fierce opposition from the American oil industry, which sees it as a nightmare scenario that would throttle refinery operations and create unintended consequences across fuel markets. Vulnerable Republicans in Congress are nonetheless pressing Trump to act, with high diesel prices hitting farmers and truckers ahead of the November midterm elections. Analysts warn the ban could backfire by worsening domestic fuel availability rather than relieving price pressure.

Energy analyst Javier Blas suggested the export ban talk may also serve a diplomatic purpose, functioning as a message to the EU and UK to release diesel from their strategic petroleum reserves and reduce their bidding in the market, while pushing them toward negotiations with Ukraine.
