Trump Declares Immediate Russia-Ukraine Energy Ceasefire but Zelensky Says He Was Not Consulted

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an immediate "energy ceasefire," ordering both sides to halt attacks on each other's energy infrastructure. In a social media post, Trump wrote: "Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!" Neither Moscow nor Kyiv issued an immediate independent confirmation at the time of the announcement.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was blindsided by the declaration. Speaking to Axios, Zelensky said the announcement "was news for me," but added that Ukraine would agree to the halt if Russia does the same, and urged Trump to specify when the truce would begin if he had negotiated it with Putin. The announcement marks at least the second time Trump has claimed a similar energy truce, with a prior announcement having failed to stop aerial strikes on energy facilities.

The energy ceasefire declaration came one day after Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a controversial deal for the United States to purchase Russian diesel fuel, a move Trump's Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described as beneficial to Americans, saying the administration would use all available legal authority to implement it. The announcement also followed Trump publicly calling for Zelensky to be replaced, blaming Ukraine's strikes on Russian oil refineries for elevated diesel prices. Zelensky, for his part, offered to hold Ukrainian elections if Russia agrees to a full 60-day ceasefire, responding directly to Trump's pressure on the leadership question.
