Ukraine Strikes Orsk Refinery 1500 km Inside Russia Hitting Hydrocracking Unit and Sparking Fire

Ukraine's military confirmed it attacked the Orsknefteorgsintez refinery in Russia's Orenburg region on August 11, a facility located more than 1,500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border near Kazakhstan. The strike hit the refinery's hydrocracking complex, a key unit for producing higher-value fuels, and triggered a fire at the site. Local residents posted videos showing a large smoke plume rising from the facility following a series of explosions.

The attack is part of a sustained Ukrainian campaign targeting Russian downstream energy infrastructure deep inside the country, a strategy analysts say is increasingly putting pressure on Russia's fuel supply. Market watchers flagged the strike as adding further uncertainty to global gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel prices, as repeated hits on Russian refining capacity continue to reverberate through energy markets. A separate fire at a Russian Far East refinery was also reported the same day, attributed to a technical incident.
