S&P 500 and Dow Pull Back From Record Highs as 10-Year Treasury Yield Nears 24-Year High
Read this in the Market Flux appU.S. stocks retreated on Wednesday, October 7, as surging Treasury yields pulled investors out of equities that had recently touched record levels. The S&P 500 fell roughly 0.23 percent to close near 7,801, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 341 points or 0.66 percent to 51,179.87, and the Nasdaq Composite shed 0.24 percent to finish around 27,533. Total U.S. market value declined by approximately $345 billion on the session.
The primary catalyst was a sharp rise in long-dated government bond yields. The 10-year Treasury yield hovered between 5.28 and 5.31 percent, near a 24-year high, while the 30-year yield also reached a 24-year peak before easing slightly after a solid 10-year note auction tempered demand fears. Federal Reserve minutes from the September meeting added to unease by revealing divided views among policymakers on future rate increases.
Within the S&P 500, the session's biggest single-stock winner was Micron Technology, which gained 4.1 percent and added roughly $48 billion in market value. Apple added $44 billion and Alphabet gained $34 billion. On the losing side, Meta shed $45 billion, NVIDIA fell $43 billion, and Caterpillar dropped nearly 5.75 percent, losing $23 billion, after federal regulatory authorities initiated a competition inquiry into agricultural equipment markets. CrowdStrike fell 4.8 percent and Palo Alto Networks declined 3.4 percent. SpaceX was the single largest drag on total U.S. market value, erasing $59 billion.
By sector, Energy led gainers as elevated crude oil prices, with WTI settling near $89.20 per barrel after a 2.1 percent decline on the day, continued to support oil and gas producers. Healthcare and financials also posted relative outperformance. Rate-sensitive sectors bore the brunt of selling: REITs, utilities, consumer discretionary, and technology all closed lower. The Nasdaq recorded 61 new 52-week highs but also 182 new 52-week lows, reflecting broad weakness in speculative and small-cap growth names.
Despite the pullback, the S&P 500 remains just 0.6 percent below its 52-week high, the closest major benchmark to its peak, and is on pace for roughly a 14 percent gain in 2026. Asian markets opened lower following Wall Street's retreat, with Japanese government bond yields easing across maturities as foreign investors sharply increased purchases of Japanese equities, buying 2,491.9 billion yen worth of Japanese stocks after selling 362 billion yen the prior week. Investors are watching upcoming third-quarter earnings from Comcast and AMD as the next potential market catalysts.
