10-Year Treasury Yield Closes Above 5% for First Time Since 2007 as Fed Rate Hike Looms

The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield surged past 5% on Tuesday, reaching 5.041%, its highest level since July 2007 and marking the first close above that threshold since before the Global Financial Crisis. From 2008 through 2025, there were zero trading days on which the benchmark yield closed above 5%, making Tuesday's move a significant break in an 18-year pattern.

Two forces drove the move: rising expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates at its Wednesday meeting, and a surge in oil prices tied to the conflict with Iran. The 30-year Treasury bond yield also climbed to its highest level since June 2007, signaling broad pressure across the long end of the curve.
