Anthropic Signs Up to $12 Billion Cloud Computing Deal With Akamai, Sending AKAM Shares Surging

Anthropic has struck a cloud services agreement with Akamai Technologies valued at approximately $12 billion, according to Bloomberg, with Reuters reporting a slightly lower figure of $11.6 billion. The deal, announced September 24, is designed to provide Anthropic with expanded AI computing capacity as demand for its Claude models continues to accelerate.

The agreement marks a dramatic expansion of the two companies' relationship. Akamai had disclosed a seven-year, $1.8 billion cloud infrastructure contract with Anthropic in May 2026, which was at the time the largest deal in Akamai's history. The new agreement dwarfs that figure, underscoring the pace at which Anthropic is consuming compute resources. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei had cited 80x growth in annualized revenue and usage in the first quarter of 2026 as driving the company to secure additional computing capacity as quickly as possible.

Akamai shares surged on the news, continuing a pattern seen when the original deal was disclosed in May, when the stock rose more than 25 percent. The latest agreement further cements Akamai's role as a key AI infrastructure provider as the company has worked to expand its cloud business beyond its legacy content delivery and cybersecurity operations.
