Iran Vows to Strike 20 Targets for Every 2 or 3 US Hits as Tanker War Escalates

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned on September 9 that it would retaliate against 20 enemy targets for every two or three Iranian targets struck by the United States, as a senior Iranian official declared Tehran prepared for a more intense war and said the country has no choice but to fight. The official, cited by Bloomberg, described the conflict as existential and said Iran would escalate its strikes in response to continued US attacks.

The exchange of blows has intensified rapidly. US Central Command said it destroyed eight IRGC-linked tankers over the preceding days following two Iranian missile attacks on US Navy vessels, framing the tanker strikes as deterrence by punishment. None of the Iranian missile attacks successfully hit American warships, and no US personnel were reported harmed.

Analysts and military officials are questioning whether the US tanker strategy can actually deter Iran. Because Tehran appears to value placing a missile into an American destroyer far more than it values losing an empty cargo ship, the asymmetry undermines the logic of economic punishment. The IRGC, a powerful faction separate from Iran's regular military, owns the targeted vessels, further complicating the calculus. A successful strike on a US warship causing significant American casualties, analysts warn, could rapidly transform the broader conflict.
