Melania Trump Brokers Localized Ceasefire for Oleshky Starting October 29

First Lady Melania Trump has secured a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine confined to the city of Oleshky, a front-line settlement in southern Ukraine on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River opposite Kherson, the White House announced on October 23. The ceasefire takes effect October 29 and will temporarily halt all military action in the city to allow humanitarian aid to reach residents and to establish a civilian evacuation route through a designated safe passageway.

Melania Trump, acting in her formal role as Exclusive Intermediary, initiated direct discussions with both Russian and Ukrainian leadership and aligned the two sides on objectives, technical procedures, timing, and terms. The agreement also provides for demining efforts and calls for non-military civilian representatives from both countries to visit residents in their homes to assess needs. Residents who wish to evacuate will receive coordinated transport to their destination of choice, whether Russia or Ukraine.

The First Lady said the situation in Oleshky is dire, with the remaining population consisting primarily of elderly residents lacking adequate food, clean water, medicine, and electricity while living amid mined roads under regular military attack. She noted the ceasefire was made possible by a communication channel previously established with both governments through her earlier work facilitating the reunification of 34 children. An impartial American media organization has been secured to document the process on the ground.

The Oleshky agreement comes against a backdrop of failed broader ceasefire attempts, including an "energy ceasefire" President Trump announced on October 11 that quickly collapsed after Russia continued strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure and Ukraine resumed attacks on Russian refineries.
