OpenAI Acquires Orchestra Bio to Expand AI Push Into Drug Development

OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio, a startup that builds AI agents to help pharmaceutical companies manage drug development, the company confirmed exclusively to Axios on Tuesday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Orchestra Bio's platform allows scientists to delegate tasks such as monitoring studies, tracking drug development timelines and identifying potential delays to AI agents. OpenAI said it will integrate Orchestra's team and technology into Rosalind, its existing suite of AI models and tools designed for life sciences researchers, with both companies aiming to connect scientific findings with the decisions needed to advance potential treatments.

The acquisition marks OpenAI's latest move to expand beyond its core competencies in coding and cybersecurity, putting it in direct competition with Anthropic, which is also pushing into science and drug discovery. The deal signals a broader race among leading AI developers to apply agent-based systems to pharmaceutical research, an industry where reducing development timelines could carry significant commercial and medical consequences.
