The two united in rejecting calls to slow the development of advanced AI, with Trump dismissing existential AI fears and robot-takeover warnings as a "hoax" and "a scam," and Huang responding that "we're not going to let that happen" in reference to any AI slowdown. Trump also posted six times on the topic during the day and criticized opposition to data center construction, arguing that calls to slow development are driven by the fact that the U.S. is leading other countries.

The episode marks a sharp and growing split between the White House and some of the most prominent figures in the AI industry. Over the preceding weekend, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for AI model developers to slow their pace of development in response to safety fears circulating among researchers, a position backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Elon Musk and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis. Trump and Huang sided firmly against that camp, with Huang saying AI safety and innovation can advance together and calling doomsday predictions "not grounded in science."

The market reaction was swift and negative before Trump's pushback landed. Nvidia shares fell 3.2% and AMD dropped 4.7%, with the Nasdaq 100 down 1.5% in futures trading as the slowdown calls from Amodei and others hit chip stocks. The 10-year Treasury yield also reached 5% during the session. Trump's intervention, coordinated with Huang, appeared aimed at containing the market fallout and signaling that the administration's posture of encouraging rapid AI growth and data center expansion remains unchanged.
