UK Approves Jackdaw North Sea Gas Field, Pairs Decision With £2 Billion Wealth Fund

The British government formally approved drilling at the Jackdaw natural gas field in the North Sea on October 21, with Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh announcing the decision alongside the creation of a £2 billion wealth fund. Bloomberg reported gas output from the field could begin as soon as this month, underscoring how far along construction already is.

Jackdaw is part of Adura, the North Sea joint venture owned equally by Shell and Equinor, which together make up the UK's largest independent North Sea producer. At peak production, the field is expected to supply roughly 6.5 percent of UK Continental Shelf gas output, enough to heat more than 1.4 million homes, and the government framed the approval as a step toward reducing Britain's reliance on imported energy.

The project had a turbulent path to approval. It was originally sanctioned under the previous Conservative government but was later struck down by courts on climate grounds. The Burnham government had delayed its ruling until after a parliamentary by-election on October 8 to avoid political fallout, given internal Labour resistance to new North Sea development. Environmental advocates argue the approval undercuts Britain's pledges to cut carbon emissions.

With Jackdaw now cleared, attention shifts to the Rosebank oilfield, another major North Sea project that was similarly quashed by the courts. Energy Secretary Fahnbulleh is expected to rule on Rosebank in the coming months.
