The summit is the second in-person meeting between the two leaders in 2026, following Trump's visit to Beijing in May.

China's dominance in rare earth mining and processing loomed over the talks, with analysts and Reuters reporting that the US will remain dependent on Chinese supply well into the 2030s despite rapid domestic investment. The uneven delivery on headline truce commitments, including soybean purchases, Boeing aircraft orders, and rare earths export licenses, underscored the fragility of the arrangement and the absence of a standardized licensing process. China's foreign ministry declined to confirm whether further talks would be held at the APEC finance ministers' meeting in Hong Kong in October or whether Trump would be invited to the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November, saying only that both sides are maintaining communication on future leader interactions.

The summit was broadly described as heavy on symbolism and light on substance, with the harder structural disputes over trade, technology, Taiwan and Iran left unresolved. A Democratic senator called on Trump to press Xi over China's support for Iran. Gold markets braced for two-way price swings around the meeting, and the broader diplomatic backdrop was described as a split screen, with pomp masking deep underlying rivalry.
