TotalEnergies Pledges $10 Billion in Angola Over Five Years and Fast-Tracks Acacia-5 Discovery to First Oil

TotalEnergies and its partners plan to invest $10 billion in Angola's oil sector over the next five years, CEO Patrick Pouyanné announced at a conference in Luanda, with funding directed at both existing developments and new exploration to sustain the company's current output of roughly 450,000 barrels per day in the country, which represents more than 40% of Angola's total production.

Alongside the investment commitment, TotalEnergies disclosed a new oil discovery at the Acacia-5 well in Block 17, roughly 150 kilometers off Angola's Atlantic coast. The company is fast-tracking the find toward first oil within just three months of the discovery being made in June 2026, using available capacity on the nearby Pazflor FPSO to avoid the cost and time of new infrastructure. TotalEnergies also entered two new operated exploration blocks close to existing production hubs, positioning itself to replicate the same low-cost, infrastructure-led development model.

The announcements reflect a broader return by international majors to deepwater exploration in Angolan waters, where proximity to installed FPSOs sharply reduces the time and capital needed to bring new finds online. Block 17, which TotalEnergies operates with a 38% stake alongside Equinor, ExxonMobil, BP, and Sonangol, already hosts four FPSOs and has become a proving ground for fast-track tie-back development.
